RACE RECAP - Spartan Stadion Race, Abu Dhabi

Updated: Apr 25, 2019

"Yeah, a ha, you know what it is, black and yellow, black and yellow...."

At the last Spartan race of the season, OCR Nation were out in force, breaking our own record for the biggest team a Spartan race has ever seen. It was as if Spartan Arabia had decided to put on the race in our honour, given that the whole stadium race was awash with our beautiful #BlackAndYellow.

The team braved yet another early start, with many members of the team making the journey from Dubai and reaching the stadium just as the sun was rising. It was a special event for many reasons, not least because this was the first Stadium Race to ever be held in the UAE. A few members of the team had made the journey to the Spartan Stadion Race in Bahrain which took place in January of this year, but for almost the whole team, this was the first chance to experience this unique Spartan event.

What this race lacks in muddy barbed wire crawls and dunk walls, it more than compensates with stairs, box jumps, stairs, sandbag smashes, stairs, heavy skipping ropes and even a few stairs thrown in for good measure. You may well have had the incline set to MAX for the last month in preparation for this race, but it was not until you ran up and down your 5th staircase in as many minutes that the magnitude of what this kind of race entailed really began to sink in. If you are yet you try a Stadium Race, we would recommend taking the stairs in your apartment building for the next few months to get yourself ready! Take a look at the race map below to see the route for yourself...

The race was a huge success for the team, but it also had incredibly special moments of success for many individual members of the team. There was a return to racing for two of our founding members Ivana and Barbara. After time on the sidelines for both of our elite female racers, it was special to see them standing on the start line again. We are thrilled they made it back for the last race of the season and look forward to seeing them on podiums again soon. We also got to see some of our members taking places on the podium in their various age groups. Our Champ Gada took the gold medal in her age group, with Maryam (AKA. OCR Granny) also taking a gold medal for her age category. The team was also thrilled to see Hadya make it onto the podium in her age group. Proud to see our elite racer Jess Towel take 2nd overall! She is on fantastic form this year and we are getting used to seeing her on the elite podiums. Congratulations to all of you!

Due to the unique format of the Stadium race, we could not set off all 160ish members of the team at the same time. Instead, groups of 7 people were set off every minute, which meant that there was a constant stream of OCR Nation members throughout the stadium. Wherever you looked you could see our team battling up and down stairs, throwing spears or carrying sandbags as we completely took over the Zayed Sports City Stadium. e to the unique format of the Stadium race, we could not set off all 160ish members of the team at the same time. You can see us crushing obstacles and relaxing in the festival area in our official OCR Nation race video below!

The race was without a fire jump (as it may have ended up starting an actual grass fire) so we made do with a tire jump! While jumping over tires lacks the action film excitement that jumping over fire brings, the team still managed to get some awesome finish line shots!

After another incredible event, the the whole OCR Nation team stood together on the podium as we were awarded the Biggest Team award for the second Spartan Arabia event in succession. "Black and Yellow" rang through the air, the sun shone down and we enjoyed every last moment as the season drew to a close. We are gutted to see the Spartan season end, just as we felt like we were really getting going, but we certainly made the most of the races on offer.

While the season in the Middle East is over for now, team members will be flying out for international races over the summer so keep watching for further Race Recaps!

It's been emotional! Keep an eye out for updates on summer training sessions, road races and plenty things which will keep us busy until the OCR season starts again in September. Until then guys, remember, we are #StrongerTogether
